There is a correct amount of Flash to use!
Monday, November 21st, 2005When you make crazy rollover menus, and image fades that go on for-what-seems-like-ever, you’re hurting your site more than you’re helping it; in more ways than one.
1. Download time! People underestimate this because of the growing number of broadband users. However the time it takes to finish loading your page will be in direct correlation to how many people use that back button to the search engine, to find a new site. You get about 4 seconds tops, but there are tricks to extend it. Email Me if you’d like to discuss it further.
2. Search engines! Search engines don’t index flash. There may be ways around it, but it’s never as good as straight html and text. So make sure you’re not trading off too much to get that stunning look.
3. Ease of Use! The great thing about html is that 95% of the time it looks the same on every site you visit. A link looks like a link, and text looks like text. When you use flash these lines sometimes get blurred with the use of icons, and buttons for everything. Thus users don’t know how to navigate your site, and the more time someone spends looking for where they want to go, the more likely you’ll be losing that customer.
In conclusion, just be careful. Flash is a great resource, but like everything in life… MODERATION is the key!
